The national hive is the most widely used bee hive in Ireland . This makes it easier for bee keepers to purchase bees on frames and exchange equipment with other bee keepers.

Cedar is the ideal wood for beehives. The natural oils make it less prone to warping, less susceptible to insect infiltration and less likely to rot than other wood.  It does not need to be painted but a protective application of linseed oil can help maintain the wood’s natural colour.
